Well, another day went by all because i overdid the internet. I pretty much exhausted JesuOtaku's videos, the recent 'Until We Win' by Lordkat that feature Earth Worm Jim and a slew of other things. I feel like crap, mainly because i let the day slip away and watched more videos that i should just do in moderation. While I have to chock a lot of it the JesuOtaku videos, I have no one to blame but myself. The thing i have to do is just not do any of this, the problem is it become routine and it's difficult for me to break from a routine.
I'm in constant need for the internet, hence why i call it an addiction. What i need to do is get my but out of bed ealiry and find something more constructive to do. I did plan on reading up on some short stories and comment about them here but as usual, that never fell through.
Tomorrow is a school day and I am looking forward to it, I just need to walk away from the internet. I have to really do it now, test myself. Right now, i'm going to get some air.
I have to stop bitching, if i'm well aware of my addiction, then i have to learn to fight it. And boy do I despise the Firefox spell check. The word i want is not even listed but put the misspelling through Google and boom, I get the proper spell. Oh Well, it's time for me to walk away . . . just walk away . . .

I WISH I COULD QUIT YOU!!!
Wow, yesterday was odd but expected. After my anti-virus was done scanning i just went on an internet binge. It was to the point where i realized that my brain was turning to mush and i was watching the same videos i watched last week. And it doesn't help that i found someone new to watch known as JesuOtaku at TGWTG, someone who gave xxxHolic a very fair and rather deep review. It was honestly the first time i've seen an anime review that was at the same level of professionalism as Bennet the Sage. I then found her youtube page:

So yeah, a new place for me to binge it up. You know, i should start making a log on how much time i waste on the internet, maybe even talk about my reaction to some of the videos out there.

I like what he said at the very end. I know is not very liked but that's because he's brutally honest. Hollywood has excossted what we can do with special effects and we don't need more movies to prove what we can do. My feeling are mutual, Hollywood should give special effects a brake, I hate the special effects of Bay's Transformers not become they are bad (they are impressive) but they are overused to the point where by the time the climatic fight takes place, it just bores me. Bay's movies are a rollercoster but they also desensitize the audience. That's why hollywood believe they need to make things bigger and better which to be quite frank, is an idea that's gotten old as well.
The trailers look awesome, don't get me wrong, however TOO often I have found the trailers to be better then the movies themselves. You know, it use to be that the movie trailers were dull but they at least did their job of getting people into the theater AND they didn't threated to be better then the movies they were advertising.
People will argue that hollywood has run out of ideas and it's hard not to argue against that but I believe that this is true with every generation of movies that come out. There will always be the fade shit that stinks up the screen, make a shit ton of movie but never be heard of again. Case in point, Film Brain's review of 'The Jazz Singer':

But then comes at least one movie that stands the test of time and proves to be more successful in the long term. Sadly, in america, the long term is hinted at but never fully taken into account. It's always about the here and now and that's why these shitty special effect movies are here to stay.

So . . . yah! Addiction!!!
I am so addicted to the Internet. I couldn't even wait until saturday to browse, most of my friday evening was filled with browsing, and i ended up watching he same videos again. I think my addiction revolves around having a visual stimulus and I tried to watch TV instead of the internet, but I only have network TV and let me tell you, network TV borderlines on sucking. There are some shows that are intriguing but they are rarer then Mew. In fact, I use to have an addiction towards TV but now that addiction has been replaced with the internet. Really, what i need to do is have my reading and writing as the new addiction but they are not visual stimulus and that is the kind of thing my brain gets addicted to.
I have an idea to what I can do for today, maybe talking about some of my usual haunts online and my anti-virus is running. Excuse me . . .

Essay no more!
Well i went to my professor and had a few superficial things to correct. Other then that, the darn thing is turned in and I'm almost home free. After todays discussion on American Romanticism, I am having second thoughts about my original idea for the final essay.
Edgar Allen Poe is my favorite author and he falls under the credentials for the final paper but I might try something a bit unorthodox. If my prof approves of the idea though, then i'm home free and on the flip side, I'll be reading a lot of Poe's work and will most like put my thoughts of each work on the blog.
For now i'm taking the rest of the day with ease, i feel like a weight is lifted off my shoulder and it's nice outside. If you haven't figured out yet, i'm not one of those nerds that can stay indoors all day, i have to go out every-now and then or else cabin fever settles in. Oh and a weekend aproaches, woot!!!

W00T! Wild Essay Captured
well, i managed to finish my essay. I'm going to meet my professor during his office hours and if there is anything further i need to do, i'll have enough time before class to finish. This thing was insane and by all means it shouldn't be, thankfully my panic was the ultimate fuel my attention needed to stick with the essay. Although i did break to go outside and even catch some interesting shows on PBS, i still managed to get the bastard done. I still feel anxious, after all my prof could lay some bad news on me. And for some reason, all my USB drive went missing so i have to borrow one from someone else. Many what a crazy day, there were moments i though i just say 'screw it' but i stuck to my guns.
Now if only I had the same determination with my personal writing as i did with that essay. I'd probably have written a dictionary size novel by now. And i do have one more paper left to do and it's going to be even crazier then the last 2 because it's supposedly a combo of both.
I've made a decision, and if i make this vow on this blog i have to follow it, that i will cut down my internet browsing only to saturdays during my time with the final essay. Wild Essay Approaches
Well, today is the last day to do my essay. I would have done it before but I've been procrastinating a lot. Plus it don't help when i meet up with some old friends from my university and one of those friends talks about the sci-fi horror game, 'Dead Space.' I saw 20 minutes of a Lets play of that game and it's one of those deals where you think you forgotten about something but time goes on and someone or something reminds you of what you tried to forget.
He mentioned the phrase 'make us whole again' which came up only once when watching the LP but still was unnerving. The images and 'music' were bone chilling as well. Seeing that Bazerker Running around on the bridge and watching Isaac loose oxygen in space, his body floating towards the dead moon but before he leaves the ship, one of the monsters rips off his leg with ease and runs off with it like a happy dog with a bone.
Then there is that damn music, freaking hell man. It's like that one scene from The Dark Knight when the Joker crashes Bruce's party and threaten Rachael. That one, dragged out cord from a violin is unnerving enough but when a video game's music composes nothing but that, that's when it's time to just walk the hell away.
I'll give the developers of that game credit, it does succeed is scaring the piss out of the play or anyone who watches the game play. I really shouldn't be talking about this crap right now before doing an essay, hell most of what i did see of Dead Space probably wasn't the worst of it and by all means should not scare me. I guess you could call it therapy and readying myself for the coming storm.
Oh and when i think of Dead Space i think of the DS comic's cover. That shit is freaky. I wont link to it directly but i'll link you to I-Mockery's weeklies page so you can hunt for it yourself.

Reading Reaper Update 11/11/09
Wow! Posting my first article here was interesting. I learned a valuble lesson, posting pictures can be a pain but they are well worth it. When I inserted a picture, the html code ended up at the beginning of the article which meant I had to move the code to where I wanted it. I still think it was worth it though, I prefer articles with pictures. It adds a little more life to the work and keeps the reader from getting bored. What really bums me out is that I cannot add popup text to the pictures. I original added some corny jokes it, mainly because I like the little jokes some authors uses with pictures. I was going to put them in the article as captions but I'm not sure how that would look so for future artciles, I'm going to use the pics from RR#1 and put some captions below them in a style I hope works. This means though . . . I have to relive moving them, oi . . . HERE WE GO!!!!

Okay, so even in the 'Compose' section in the posting editor, the picture ends up at the beginning of the article. I still have to move the code because the compose section's scroller doesn't move when panning a picture. Which means i have to move the code in the html editor. At least i can still copy and paste the code where i want it.
And i just realized something, if i want to post a sequence of pictures, i would have to post the last pic first, post the sequence backwards and after the first is inserted then put in my opening monologue. Live and Learn I guess, at least i came up with a more efficient way to post multiple pics in a row.
Jeeze laweeze, thank Jeebus Creebus for undo, I accidentally deleted the intro because this darn thing has a habit of scrolling back to the start every time I copy and paste in the Compose.
So the Compose shows you a more document and preview look of the post but it's glitchy as all heck and the html editor gives you more control but at the same time your looking at nothing but text and codes and can easily loose track of you picture and such. I'm glad i'm learning this now before trying to post another article and run into the same problems.
And everytime i try to put the caption closer, i delete the picture because there is some preset buffer. Wonderful(!) Oh that. A (!) supposedly represent sarcasm. At least that's what wikipedia tells me and no i'm not going to link to it, i got enough on my plate putting these pictures in . . .
You know what, if the caption don't even work, then i wont bother for future articles. I'm the determined (read dumb) type that never gives in!!! What I'm going to do next is put in a picture from RR#1 and follow it with the popup joke i intend to put in. And wow the code for the caption below looks complicated and awful . . . you wanna see it? WOW!!! I tried to mess with the code to have it show up and damn . . . that was just . . . i'm not trying that again. I mean, look at what it did to the caption above. Imagine that horrific text but like dominating the rest of this post. No sir, i'm not doing that again.

oh you wont believe this shit, i tried to post this evil thing and the editor gives me an error message saying i can't post it because it does not recognize an html tag known as META, a tag THE COMPOSE SECTION PUT IN THE FIRST CAPTION. This has been a very interesting lesson in blogging. Pictures inserter have a mind of its own and the editor doesn't even recognize it's own coding.
I'm going to fix it, it looks nothing like how it was and walk away and man harrison ford is obsessed with his family and his wife (GH podcast, you are the bane of my attention).

The Blazing Magnesium Intro
Have you ever been so excited about playing an upcoming video game or watching the next supposed blockbuster movie that there was no way it could exceed your expectations. Or even match them for that matter. That seems to be the consensus with a lot of entertainment medias, especially with the internet today adding fuel to the fire, there will always be a hype over something and it rarely lives up to it.
For me, I built up a lot of hype for myself over a book. And no, it’s not the seventh (and last) Harry Potter book that everyone else got caught up in the hype over. Actually the book I was really hyped up to read happen to be written back in 1938, first published in the still running sci-fi magazine ‘Analog Science Fiction and Fact’, back then called ‘Astounding Stories’.
That story being “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, Jr, a sci-fi novella, a novella being a book that is shorter then your average novel.

I heard of the movie before and did a little looking into, since sci-fi and anything Halloween-ish (especially from the 80s) always interest me, and I found out that the movie was based on “Who Goes There?”
Time passed and I started to watch James “AVGN” Rolfe’s movie reviews. One such review dealt with Sci-Fi remakes and guess which movie gets mentioned:

Excuses me, movieS. Yes, while many people maybe familiar with Carpenter’s gore fest, it was not the first to be based on the novella. In 1951 there came the first movie loosely based on ‘Who Goes There?” called ‘The Thing from Another World’ which from what I can tell from James’ review, strays from the book more so then the Carpenter movie. And yes there apparently will be another remake coming that may be more fateful to the book. James even mentions the book which peaked my interest in it again.
Finally, I visited Cracked.com and one article came up that put my hype in Campbell’s story in overdrive.

Three different website were pitching this story to me. So I caved and recently picked ‘Who Goes There’ up at Barnes & Nobel and gave it a read.
My Hairy Blue Thoughts on the book
“That’s Dead. As dead as the mammoths they find frozen in Siberia.” Dr. Cooper (p39)
The book follows the same structure as the movies. A camp of Scientists are studying various sciencey things at the Antarctic. One team of the scientists find a spaceship with an alien frozen in ice. They attempt to blow the (magnesium plated) ship free from the ice but instead it turns into a Super Light Bright (magnesium mixed with heat tends to do that). Their find was not a complete loss, they managed to carve out the alien in the ice (without thermite this time) and take the Thing-icles back to their camp. After some debate they thaw out the alien which can shape shift into whatever it consumes and it escape. And that is when the real fun begins.
I will say this right now, I have not seen either of the movies so I was going into this story blind. Now as for my expectations, even though they were very high they actually were met. I think expectations towards a book can be a little more forgiving then a video game or movie. For a movie or game you have trailers influencing your perception and you create a wild fantasy that raises the bar too high. For a book though, you only have word of mouth to inform you. No rendered cut-scene that have nothing to do with the book or best parts of the book already spoiled by a trailer. Just a book and your own imagination. As I read this book I started to get consumed by the plot and the very intrigued conversations exchanged by the characters. The hype dies down but was replaced with excitement and interest.
In many sci-fi stories, there is always moments were the characters analyze their situation and that is a great deal of this story. What is interesting about this book is that the alien’s method of turning into other life forms is actually explained in a reasonable way. Remember Alex from the game ‘Prototype’? Well his ability to consumes people and takes their likeness can scientifically be explain by ‘Who Goes There?’
Plus the different methods the scientist come up with to combat the alien is also quite interesting. I especially like the main character MacReady’s last method to combat ‘The Thing’ that actually works.
‘The Thing’ is never given a consistent name. It’s always something negative like ‘The Thing’, ‘That’, ‘The Monster’, 'The Creature’, the last one being the most dominate title towards the end. I just find it weird that ‘The Thing’ really is only called ‘The Thing’ in a few narratives and conversations, less then ‘the monster’ or ‘the creature’ and yet ‘The Thing’ becomes the chosen name for the movies. My guess is that ‘Monster’ and ‘Creature’ are so overused in movie titles, ‘The Thing’ sounded a little more catchy.
Campbell build up ‘The Thing’ as something hellish and evil filled with hate. Well if I were ‘The Thing’, I would be pissed off too after a bunch of humans (aliens to ‘The Thing’) had blown up my ship and crewmates (the book hits there were more aboard the ship) and plan to study me like a lab rat. The scientists even speculate that ‘The Thing’ wants to take over the world. Well, that is homeostasis for you, is that not what humans have done? Really, I do find some horror in this book but I kind of sympathize with ‘The Thing’ in that it only wants to live and that does detract from the horror somewhat. Grant it, as a human myself, I of course am going to root for the home team.
Now I said I was walking into this book blind but it was not with a clean slate. For those of you who have seen the Carpenter Movie and have not read the book, I have got to say, Kurt Russell really fits as MacReady and I almost can picture him as MacReady while reading the book. Oh and get this, the book also has a character named ‘Norris’ and I will give you three guesses who I thought of playing as that character. Here is a line from the book that cemented my choices:
“If MacReady was a man of bronze, Norris was a man of steel.” (p29)
Bad-ass!
The main selling point of the book is the ambient paranoia created by the science team’s speculation of who might be ‘The Thing.’
“Each man eyeing his neighbor with the grandest exhibition of faith and trust.” Bennings (p79)
Although trust and friendship is the theme of the book there is conflict from the very beginning. When ‘The Thing’ is frozen and brought to the camp, there is the cliché exchanged between scientists who feels ‘The Thing’ should be studied and those who feel it should be put back from whence it came. But keep in mind that this was written back in the 1930s when sci-fi was still fresh and new, so you really cannot take it as a cliché and the dialog really does add to the suspense and builds the atmosphere for the rest of the book.
And once the following quote has passed, you know shit has hits the fan:
“It’s a wonder the hellish creature didn’t eat me in my sleep.” Connant (p48)
My Mewing Recommendation
I highly recommend this book for not just sci-fi fans but for everyone. It is a novella so the average person probably can finish it in one sitting. The story has no tell-tale signs from the era it was published in, so you could imagine it taking place in modern times. The pacing, plot and characters are well done but what do you expect from an award winning writer like Campbell. And last but not least, it has a creature that even puts Norris on the edge.
Now before I end, I would like to address one thing. I recommend either loaning the book from the library or buying it. If you check out the article I linked from Cracked.com, you will find that the book is in full online. But I strongly disagree with actually reading the book off the internet mainly because of the complaint of induces eye strain much like from a Kindle and other e-Books. I still believe there is a place for actual printed books in this world. Plus, there is some extra content in the printed book featuring commentary and a screen test for ‘Who Goes There’ both by William F Nolan (who is better know for his work on ‘Logan’s Run’).
In conclusion, for this October season, you just cannot go wrong with a sci-fi horror about a group of scientists fights a shape-shifting monster in the barren tundra of Antarctica.

Have you ever been so excited about playing an upcoming video game or watching the next supposed blockbuster movie that there was no way it could exceed your expectations. Or even match them for that matter. That seems to be the consensus with a lot of entertainment medias, especially with the internet today adding fuel to the fire, there will always be a hype over something and it rarely lives up to it.
For me, I built up a lot of hype for myself over a book. And no, it’s not the seventh (and last) Harry Potter book that everyone else got caught up in the hype over. Actually the book I was really hyped up to read happen to be written back in 1938, first published in the still running sci-fi magazine ‘Analog Science Fiction and Fact’, back then called ‘Astounding Stories’.
That story being “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, Jr, a sci-fi novella, a novella being a book that is shorter then your average novel.
The Hype with Three Red Eyes
The story behind my growing interesting in the book actually birthed on the internet and had grown over years.
My interest first began back during Noah ‘Spoony’ Antwiler’s days on youtube, when he reviewed the PC game based on the Movie: John Carpenter’s “The Thing.”

I heard of the movie before and did a little looking into, since sci-fi and anything Halloween-ish (especially from the 80s) always interest me, and I found out that the movie was based on “Who Goes There?”
Time passed and I started to watch James “AVGN” Rolfe’s movie reviews. One such review dealt with Sci-Fi remakes and guess which movie gets mentioned:

Excuses me, movieS. Yes, while many people maybe familiar with Carpenter’s gore fest, it was not the first to be based on the novella. In 1951 there came the first movie loosely based on ‘Who Goes There?” called ‘The Thing from Another World’ which from what I can tell from James’ review, strays from the book more so then the Carpenter movie. And yes there apparently will be another remake coming that may be more fateful to the book. James even mentions the book which peaked my interest in it again.
Finally, I visited Cracked.com and one article came up that put my hype in Campbell’s story in overdrive.

Three different website were pitching this story to me. So I caved and recently picked ‘Who Goes There’ up at Barnes & Nobel and gave it a read.
My Hairy Blue Thoughts on the book
“That’s Dead. As dead as the mammoths they find frozen in Siberia.” Dr. Cooper (p39)
The book follows the same structure as the movies. A camp of Scientists are studying various sciencey things at the Antarctic. One team of the scientists find a spaceship with an alien frozen in ice. They attempt to blow the (magnesium plated) ship free from the ice but instead it turns into a Super Light Bright (magnesium mixed with heat tends to do that). Their find was not a complete loss, they managed to carve out the alien in the ice (without thermite this time) and take the Thing-icles back to their camp. After some debate they thaw out the alien which can shape shift into whatever it consumes and it escape. And that is when the real fun begins.
I will say this right now, I have not seen either of the movies so I was going into this story blind. Now as for my expectations, even though they were very high they actually were met. I think expectations towards a book can be a little more forgiving then a video game or movie. For a movie or game you have trailers influencing your perception and you create a wild fantasy that raises the bar too high. For a book though, you only have word of mouth to inform you. No rendered cut-scene that have nothing to do with the book or best parts of the book already spoiled by a trailer. Just a book and your own imagination. As I read this book I started to get consumed by the plot and the very intrigued conversations exchanged by the characters. The hype dies down but was replaced with excitement and interest.
In many sci-fi stories, there is always moments were the characters analyze their situation and that is a great deal of this story. What is interesting about this book is that the alien’s method of turning into other life forms is actually explained in a reasonable way. Remember Alex from the game ‘Prototype’? Well his ability to consumes people and takes their likeness can scientifically be explain by ‘Who Goes There?’
Plus the different methods the scientist come up with to combat the alien is also quite interesting. I especially like the main character MacReady’s last method to combat ‘The Thing’ that actually works.
‘The Thing’ is never given a consistent name. It’s always something negative like ‘The Thing’, ‘That’, ‘The Monster’, 'The Creature’, the last one being the most dominate title towards the end. I just find it weird that ‘The Thing’ really is only called ‘The Thing’ in a few narratives and conversations, less then ‘the monster’ or ‘the creature’ and yet ‘The Thing’ becomes the chosen name for the movies. My guess is that ‘Monster’ and ‘Creature’ are so overused in movie titles, ‘The Thing’ sounded a little more catchy.

Origin of Reading Reaper
I love the site ‘ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.’ It’s a place for a nerd to be a nerd. Anyway, I originally was going to start a blog on the site dedicated to literature that I'd call ‘Reading Reaper.’ Yeah, a very obvious pun on ‘Reading Rainbow.’ I would have continued but I was posting my first article around the same time the site was having maintains work and I had an essay for my Lit class due the same week, so in short the whole thing kind of fell through. The whole purpose for this series was to give me ambition to read and write and I don’t see why I should like it die now that I have this blog. I may start posting on TGWTG again but for now, Reading Reaper shall live on here at Nerddam. Hello everyone, I’m ReeperTheSeeker and welcome to the Blog!
The Blog-Blog-Blog-Blog! Okay, an echo does not carry any weight in text.
To be Honest, I really need a hobby and become of that fact, this Blog is Born!!!!
Okay, I’ll lay off the !!!!!!!!!!!! . . . that looks awful, seriously those explanation points are blinding. Anyway, what am I going to use this blog for?
I have no idea, not yet anyway. I never done a blog before. Oh, I have been on forums, having fun discussing a variety of things. This blog is going to be very random although I do have some vision for this . . . journal, log, diary, rant box?
You see, my greatest ambition (we all have one) is to be a writer. The only problem is that I have ADD and Dyslexia, two disabilities that kind of make that ambition a bit tricky. I can read and write very well nowadays, so Dyslexia has not been too difficult to fight against since high school but I think I can prop that up to maturity and practice. My problem now is to fight the damn ADD. I hate having such a short attention span. I do some thing to fight against it, when I’m writing, I just have the TV on (mute of course) in the back ground or turn my home PC on and have Age of Empires II play with it’s music running. But even that has it’s limitation, like I have mention I have no hobby. I view my writing ambition as something much more serious then a hobby, not a job per-say but something I feel strongly about.
What I need is a hobby, something I can sink my teeth into. So with this blog, I’m going to hunt for a hobby and it has to follow these credentials:
1) I have to feel good and confident that I will enjoy the hobby.
2) It has to be something I can do for a long time
3) Currently, I have no income or vehicle to speak of, so the hobby has to be very ‘inexpensive’ and accessible threw a ‘weekly purchasing’ schedule or cost nothing and can be found or function easily through the internet.
4) The hobby should not hinder my writing but help improve it.
Wow, did you just read that. You know what, THIS should be my hobby. I’m going to talk about whatever I feel like and do whatever the heck I like with this BLOG!!!
Sorry for being overzealous, but after typing that 4 prong rule list I can’t help but see that this blog can satisfy all 4 rules. I’ve been both in Meat World and Cyberspace long enough to have gain a plethora of knowledge. And I do like to share knowledge.
In fact, does my alias ReeperTheSeeker not suggest that I like to ‘Seek?’ So, this blog is going to get very random in the sense that there really wont be much consistency. Well, I am a Nerd, so most likely I will be talkative about nerdy things but I do wish to dabble into writing and literature as well.
I’m actually pumped now and can’t wait to get this party started . . . damnit, I’ve been watching people play DJ Hero one too many times XP.
